At RMCAD you’ll earn your Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree by taking a combination of studio classes and seminars, and by completing group and independent projects.

Studio Classes

The formula varies slightly by department, but about two-thirds of your classes will be studio classes. In most cases you will begin taking studio classes in your major during your first year at RMCAD.

Each studio class meets once or twice a week, usually for two or three hours at a stretch. This gives you plenty of time to work on your projects while the instructor is right there to lend advice and guidance. You’ll also get to share ideas with your fellow students during periodic critiques.

Our studio faculty are accomplished artists and designers who bring their extensive professional experience to the classrooms and studios.

Foundation Studies and Liberal Studies

You’ll also take Foundation Studies and Liberal Studies classes - both of which are critically important. Foundation Studies help every student, regardless of major, hone their basic artistic skills.

Liberal Studies coursework in history, math, critical thinking and the social and natural sciences will help you gain a better understanding of the world in which we live.

Academic Support

We provide a variety of academic support programs to help you succeed.

Our student ambassadors operate a tutoring center called the "MAX Center". They offer free tutoring, organized study groups and regular workshops addressing traditional curricular hurdles.

Trained tutors are available on a walk-in basis or by appointment. In addition to organized study sessions they can assist with writing, math, software, note-taking strategies, time management or any other academic issue.
