Art Education + Sculpture
Class of 2012
Hometown: Gillette, WY
Why did you choose to attend RMCAD?
I first discovered RMCAD online by looking up art schools. When reading their website, I found that RMCAD is a small school with a great community, and that was the first influence on my decision. The next deciding factor happened when I came and visited the school. I feel that when entering a campus you need to feel at home, and RMCAD offers a very welcoming campus.
What has been your favorite class so far and why?
My favorite class so far has been sculpture because of the new materials the class has introduced me to, and the way it makes you think more conceptually.
Which Liberal Studies or Foundations classes did you find the most surprising or useful?
The most influential foundations class I have taken so far is Visual Design. This is because I learned many things that can apply to any form of art.
Tell us about a favorite project you've worked on.
My favorite project I have worked on so far was a chalk pastel self-portrait. I fell in love with this project because of the medium. I have always known that I liked working with pastels, but this project showed me how much I really enjoy them.
What do you like about living in Denver/Colorado?
Colorado is a beautiful state that I enjoy living in every day. There are so many activities that Colorado and Denver offer that you can never be bored.
How has your life changed since enrolling at RMCAD?
Since enrolling at RMCAD, my life has changed quite a lot. I now live in a different state than my family and talk to them once a week. I only do my laundry when I need clean socks, I get very little sleep, and I almost forgot to mention my artwork is improving every day.
What kinds of things do you do when you're not attending classes?
When I am not attending class or doing mentorship hours at local schools, I enjoy going downtown, running, snowboarding, and just spending time with my RMCAD friends.
Was there a moment when RMCAD changed from "a school" to "my school"?
From the first day I felt that RMCAD was "my school" and not just "a school." The teachers are all very welcoming and my peers are wonderful.
What would you want a prospective student to know about RMCAD?
RMCAD has a gorgeous campus in the summer and fall. Don't be surprised when you find yourself wanting to spend more time outside than inside. But don't worry, the teachers work around that by allowing you to work outside during studio classes.
