College History: Phil Steele's Legacy

In 1963, Philip J. Steele founded Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design. Already a well-known illustrator and educator, Phil wanted to start an art training program based on the traditional, academic method of drawing and painting dating back to the Renaissance.

Campus History: The JCRS Story

Our campus has a unique history. More than 100 years ago, the Jewish Consumptives’ Relief Society founded a safe haven for patients suffering from tuberculosis in a place then known as Spivak, Colorado. While there was no known cure for TB at the time, people believed Colorado’s ample sunshine and crisp mountain air would help ease the pain of those who were afflicted.

Our Dedication to Sustainability

In 2006, we adopted a campus-wide Sustainability Initiative in an effort show our commitment to the environment and the health of our students, faculty and staff.

This Initiative means that all campus upgrades, remodels, and new construction use non-toxic, non-polluting and energy- and resource-efficient materials and processes. Our current buildings and grounds are also maintained with products that are non-toxic and less harmful than conventional products. From the fertilizer used to grow our flowers, to the cleaning products used in our classrooms, RMCAD is truly "green."

We've even been recognized by the Colorado Environmental Leadership Program with their Bronze Achiever designation.
