Shannon W. Kelly has been working as an experimental filmmaker and video installation artist for eight years. Fascinated with studying film, Kelly was first exposed to experimental cinema upon entering the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1994.
There he experienced the teachings of world-renowned experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage first hand, thereby crystallizing Kelly’s interest in pursuing filmmaking as an art form. Kelly worked extensively on experimental films and animation that explored the poetic potential of the medium until his graduation with honors in 2000.
Shortly thereafter, Kelly was awarded his first grant, and over the next five years, he documented his travels throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. The resulting film, Trans-, became part of the Denver International Airport’s film/video installation project in Fall 2005 after being screened at several North American film festivals.
In 2006, Kelly completed a major grant project through the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs called Forgotten Landscape, a significant video installation of his own design for permanent display at the Hyatt Convention Center Hotel in downtown Denver. Kelly was recently selected as a semi-finalist to propose a video installation art piece at the Fitzsimons Medical Facility in Aurora, CO.
