Dominique Smith
Fine Arts–Painting
Class of 2010
Hometown: Aurora, CO
What has been your favorite class so far and why?
I really enjoyed Painting 1 because this class taught me more about the field that I major in, and it was a good start to figuring out what my interests were in painting. It was also nice to learn how to build my own canvases, and understand what is used in paint and the history of it all.
Which Liberal Studies or Foundation Studies classes did you find the most surprising or useful?
The Art History and Literature classes were tough, but I learned the most in them. I still am reminded of things in Art History that help me relate to work I see around campus, and also in the world. Visual Design 1 & 2 were fun because we had the chance to use all different kind of media to create artwork. It allowed me to use a different thought process.
What did your favorite professor do to earn your respect or admiration?
David Mesplé, Gary Emrich, Martha Russo, Ania Kumor and Clark Richert have all been a good influence by supporting hard work and having a good foundation on what your desire is. Gary Emrich was really understanding during my fall semester of 2008 when a drunk driver hit me. The accident really shifted a lot for my family and I; he was considerate and motivational. All of these teachers have inspired me to use the basic tools I learn, and create whatever is in my heart with no limits.
Tell us about a favorite project you've worked on.
One of my favorite projects is actually a piece I am presently [Spring '09] working on. For my Experimental Drawing class, I am doing an installation focused on a nine-panel painting. This piece was inspired by the accident I was in, and it will incorporate some different media with stitching and glass. I am excited to see it completed.
What do you like about living in Denver/Colorado?
What I like about Colorado is the sunshine and energy from the people who live here.
How has your life changed since enrolling at RMCAD?
My life has changed a lot since enrolling at RMCAD. I feel more secure with who I am and what my desires are as an artist.
Was there a moment when RMCAD changed from "a school" to "my school" for you?
I discovered that RMCAD was "my school" when I formed a relationship with my teachers and they knew who I was and what I wanted to do based on my work.
What would you want a prospective student to know about RMCAD?
I would definitely say that there are so many things to take advantage of at RMCAD! Really be like a sponge while you're here because RMCAD has a lot to offer, especially from the teachers.
