Louis Monley
Interested in the study of minerals, caves, architecture and optics, the majority of Louis Monley’s photographic work features crystalline structures and colorful gems.
The images in Lightscapes are from a series of light paintings. In his artist statement, Monley describes his creative process:
“Each photo in this series was created in a single long exposure using different colored lights and lasers. To capture the image I am using a digital SLR camera in a very dark environment, this records the lights as they are waved about and creates a single picture. The scale of the work when originally made varies from four to eight feet high by eight to fourteen feet long. Exposures typically range from thirty minutes to two hours depending on size and complexity of design. While the camera shutter is open there is no image display and thus no way to check progress.”
Monley earned his BFA in Fine Arts from RMCAD in 2009 with an emphasis in Painting and Sculpture. He is the owner/operator of Topaz Plaster Co. a natural plastering company in Denver specializing in local materials, non-toxic products, and an artistic approach to projects.
