Graphic Design + Interactive Media
Class of 2009
Hometown: Aurora, CO
Why did you choose to attend RMCAD?
The work I saw coming out of the Graphic Design department captured my interest. Also, the college had a unique quality that felt like home.
What did your favorite professor do to earn your respect or admiration?
Martin Mendelsberg defines the term zest of life. Each day he comes to class passionate about each of his students. He not only wants them to understand the meaning of design, he wants each of them to succeed. He has taught me success is not measured by getting your name into a magazine, or working for a large or small company. Success is measured by your level of happiness. As designers, it is our passion to solve everyday problems. He has also taught me our inspiration comes from our personal work in our studio. This could be a typography piece or a painting. Design has inspired me to be curious about everything life offers.
Tell us about a favorite project you've worked on.
I was in 3-D Packaging and decided it would be fun to re-package the X-Men series. I kept running into walls. I released it because this project was not going to enhance an experience. I started to research. My research showed most individuals' teeth are unhealthy—this is because of the lack of pattern and education. From this information, I researched the production and distribution of dental products. I discovered the reason these conditions exist is the packaging. Currently all of the dental products are sold separately and the education is not reflected in the package design. This information led to packaging and selling the four foundations of dental hygiene together. This product has the ability to be stored next to your sink in one unit, it is a traveling case and most importantly, it provides a system for pattern. This product is the first step to relearning how to properly care for our teeth.
How would you describe the students who attend RMCAD?
The students here are like family. There are about three degrees of separation. On some level, it is very much like high school. Though here we are bigger and more tied together. We are inspired and learn a lot from our teachers. As students, we learn even more from each other.
What do you like about living in Denver/Colorado?
It always feels like a secret gem. The weather, culture and view make it a great place to live.
How has your life changed since enrolling at RMCAD?
RMCAD has made me passionate and curious about life. I see details that most do not see—it is the details which make the whole important. Above all, I communicate more clearly and because of this understand myself in ways I never thought possible.
What kinds of things do you do when you're not attending classes?
When I do have down time, I hang with my design friends and talk about design. I go to the movies and critique the storylines. I enjoy every moment I have with my husband and dogs. Though, I am like many people in the art and design field—I am obsessed with my work. I don't have a lot of down time and I prefer it that way.
Was there a moment when RMCAD changed from "a school" to "my school"?
I remember my first presentation. When I was done, the instructor told me to take a deep breath. I was so nervous I couldn't breathe. My instructor made me feel comfortable. She made me realize everyone here has the same fears. The goal is to work as a team to overcome those fears.
What would you want a prospective student to know about RMCAD?
Everything you think about, communicate and do will become your work. Focus on your strengths and know your weaknesses. If it doesn't mean anything to you, and if you can't talk about it then you can't make it mean anything to those viewing the piece. From this you will understand everything you do will be your portfolio.
