Which Liberal Studies or Foundation Studies classes did you find the most surprising or useful?

The biggest lesson I learned [in all my classes], is to push more for my own unique, creative voice while still learning the basics. Almost every teacher I've had at RMCAD stresses this. I've also learned how important it is to get the basics right if you want a professional-looking illustration. I continue to work on developing these skills.

What did your favorite professor do to earn your respect or admiration?

I think one of the most important lessons I've learned from many of my teachers is that it is okay not to have a style that looks like someone else's. One of the goals here is to find your own visual voice.

Tell us about a favorite project you've worked on.

I really like it when I can take current events, concerns, etc. and create a visual representation. Right now [Spring 2009], I'm working on an illustration where the theme is greed. I've decided to use Bernard Madoff as an inspiration and so far I really like how it is coming out.

How has RMCAD prepared you for what you want to do when you graduate?

Ultimately, I'd like to be a freelance artist and writer. I'd like to do both editorial and children's books illustrations. I think the skills I'm learning here—research, techniques, foundational skills, using technology to my advantage, presentation, etc.—will help me in achieving this goal.

How would you describe the students who attend RMCAD?

The students here are eager to share their experience and also to learn from each other. Encouragement from your fellow students is a large experience here. It is a joy to be among like-minded individuals.

What do you like about living in Denver/Colorado?

Colorado is a great place to live. The weather is wonderful—you get all four seasons. It is a great state for outdoor and indoor activities and the people here are wonderful. It's my home and I love it.

How has your life changed since enrolling at RMCAD?

I'm a more focused individual. Creativity is now a large part of my life and I plan to ensure that it stays that way. My life is a much more creative and positive experience.

Was there a moment when RMCAD changed from "a school" to "my school" for you?

I've wanted to go back to school for many years. I started out as an Art and English major when I initially went to college right after high school. Unfortunately, life has a way of getting in the way of goals if you let it, and I did. I spent a couple of decades working and learning many useful skills, but I always felt as if I were missing out on life. Over the years, I would occasionally contact RMCAD and ask about the programs and visit the school. I had what I call a midlife epiphany—and one day I just decided to stop wishing and to start doing. I've felt that RMCAD was my school right from the beginning. I've made a lot of friends with many of the other students and it has been great learning from them as well as the instructors. I changed a lot in my life to attend this school, made a lot of sacrifices, and I absolutely feel it has been worth it.

What would you want a prospective student to know about RMCAD?

Your life is what you make it. Even small decisions can have a very large impact. You get out of life what you put into it. RMCAD is a great place to start if you're serious about a creative career.
