Class of 2009
Hometown: Littleton, CO + Bellingham, WA
Why did you choose to attend RMCAD?
To pursue more of a professional art field, learn business ethics of art, and networking skills.
What has been your favorite class so far and why?
I think Illustration Media or Conceptual Illustration. I like thinking with more than one medium in a semester's time, or conceptually. After that, I really appreciate the classes that build my skill assets (drawing, painting, computers) that need work. Typography surprised me, because I never thought I would enjoy something like it.
Which Liberal Studies or Foundations classes did you find the most surprising or useful?
I think the drawing classes were most beneficial for me. They surprised me because I valued the work less at first, so I was occasionally able to accomplish more spontaneity. I also felt they helped develop my style, and ability to see positive and negative shapes, and those are important things.
What did your favorite professor do to earn your respect or admiration?
No specific events for any of my favorite professors. Just time and patience, and slowing down (constructive) criticisms enough to show me a methodology of working, or thinking in their way—without obsessing over my ability to regurgitate an exact replica. I am most in debt to those moments when a professor can slow down and appreciatively SHOW a method or thought process. Here I've reaffirmed for myself that technique is as important as content and concept. Learning to see and edit both at whim may be crucial to any flexible artist's success.
How would you describe the students who attend RMCAD?
Diverse, and generally much more focused towards art and design than I've ever experienced. They are also passionate, committed, obsessive, playful. On a side note, it never surprises me the differences and similarities we all have.
What do you like about living in Denver/Colorado?
Good bike paths, the sun, snow, proximity to the mountains, and scenery like Red Rocks and Eldorado Canyon. Essentially just wilderness close to the city.
How has your life changed since enrolling at RMCAD?
I've become much more aware of the professional world (challenges as well as opportunities), and have become more aware of networks.
What kinds of things do you do when you're not attending classes?
Hand drumming in groups, read, run/walk, hike, camp, bike ride, ski (occasionally), hang out with a loved one, criticize music and movies, sleep.
What would you want a prospective student to know about RMCAD?
Don't be afraid to ask questions, make mistakes, or explore yourself, and your surroundings!
