Illustration + Fine Arts–Painting
Class of 2012
Hometown: Fruita, CO

Why did you choose to attend RMCAD?

It had the programs I was looking for, it was in Colorado, and I loved the campus when I toured it.

Which Liberal Studies or Foundation Studies classes did you find the most surprising or useful?

The different levels at which everyone starts in a Foundations class truly surprised me. I thought we'd all be about the same level. This taught me to work at my own level and push to do my very best each time we received a new project. My most influential class for my artwork would be my Intro to Painting class. The critiques we had in there produced interesting discussions. It made thinking about the aesthetics of art fun.

What did your favorite professor do to earn your respect or admiration?

My favorite professor, Mike Moses, earns my respect and admiration when he takes the ideas I have and seriously considers them. His class has allowed me to move forward as a thinker. This movement in thought is seen in the concepts of my work.

How has RMCAD prepared you for what you want to do when you graduate?

I would love to change the world and the fine arts world when I graduate. There is so little communication between "fine arts" and the everyday person that I feel a need to change that. What is culture without art and what is society without culture? RMCAD allows me to improve my own skills and see the art from the past to present so I can hopefully influence those around me in the most effective way.

How would you describe the students who attend RMCAD?

Their focus and drive to become the best pushes me to become the best. This results in a place where students are continuously pushing the boundaries and discovering new and beautiful things. I think maybe it's because of the tuition we pay, but the students, compared to those in high school, are genuinely concerned about receiving the best education.

What do you like about living in Denver/Colorado?

I love Colorado because of all the different types of natural beauty it has, my family lives in it, and the majority of people are genuinely kind. I love Denver because it is involved in all types of art, I can go clubbing, and there is free stuff to do.

How has your life changed since enrolling at RMCAD?

I have become even more excited about creating art. I have also become more independent.

Was there a moment when RMCAD changed from "a school" to "my school"?

RMCAD became "my school" when I realized that there are students who care about the world and art as much a I do and that they see art having the same ability to communicate to world as I do.

What would you want a prospective student to know about RMCAD?

RMCAD may be an expensive school, but if you are seriously considering a career in art, every penny you spend is worth it. The professors are excellent and the school is there to work for you.
