I think what has improved the most in my time at RMCAD is my ability to create clear and interesting illustrations. My figures and environments have improved, making them more believable than before, and my ability to compose a good illustration has improved as well. I feel like I know what I'm doing when I decide to make an illustration, no matter what it is.

What most surprised you about studying at RMCAD?

What surprised me most about RMCAD is how easily the social atmosphere integrates with the academic atmosphere. In my experience, it has actually boosted my ability to improve upon my own art. Without those close connections with other students and with the teachers, I don't believe I would be as successful of a student or an artist as I am now.

What aspect of your work or technique has developed the most during your time here?

I think what has improved the most in my time at RMCAD is my ability to create clear and interesting illustrations. My figures and environments have improved, making them more believable than before, and my ability to compose a good illustration has improved as well. I feel like I know what I'm doing when I decide to make an illustration, no matter what it is.

How would you describe your style or approach?

I think my style is very painterly. I enjoy using the chiarascurro technique with acrylics to build up a 3-D effect for my figures, as well as employing texture (especially anything fluffy, fuzzy, or hairy) to create interest. My approach on the other hand has changed significantly and for the better in my time at RMCAD. Where I used to get stuck, wondering what the next step is in creating an illustration, I now have a developed system to bring me smoothly from initial idea to finished illustration.

If you were stuck in an elevator with a brand new RMCAD student, what “inside tip” would you give them?

I would tell them to never forget why they decided to go to art school, and to take advantage of the connections you can make at the school. RMCAD is a great place not only to improve upon yourself as an artist, but to make good friends and connections for life.
