Interior Design

Any great interior designer will tell you the creative process behind designing an interior space is a fine art. You have to be intuitive and practical, while stretching the limits of your imagination.

At RMCAD, we approach interior design as an extension of the fine arts. As an interior design major you will explore how light, space, color and texture shape our moods and perceptions.

We also help students learn about all of the practical things interior design involves -- space planning, computer aided drafting, and making sustainable decisions. You'll learn how to select materials and communicate with builders and contractors. And along the way you will discover and refine your own personal style.

This combined with our small class sizes, the rigor of our program, and the fact that our instructors are practicing interior designers makes the RMCAD experience unique.

Our program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. See our Accreditation Page for more informaiton.

Internships and Employment

In the last year of the program you’ll be placed in an internship that fits your preferred area of practice in the interior design field. Often, when a student excels at an internship location, it turns into a part-time or full-time position after graduation.

Many Perspectives, One Purpose

About half of the students in RMCAD’s interior design program join us just after graduating from high school. The other half find their way to RMCAD after trying a program at another college or university.

Within the program you’ll find students with a wide range of interests and backgrounds. Some are seeking a change of career; some are pursuing a second degree. All are interested in learning about how design impacts our world and how to create better, more habitable spaces.

Check out our classes, learn about our faculty, and read about some of our past and current students' accomplishments. When you're ready, our Admissions Staff is only a phone call or e-mail away.

Pioneers in Green Design Education

Today’s interior designers have a tremendous opportunity and responsibility for creating environments that enhance the health, safety and welfare of those for whom they design as well as the health of the entire planet. Designers who are prepared to meet this challenge are committed to one of the fastest-growing areas of interior design study – green design.

Keep up with the conversation in our Green Design blog: Thoughts on Sustainability

The goal of green design is to use alternative design and building strategies to prevent the environmental damage and unhealthy buildings that typically result from traditional design and construction. Sustainability, described as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” is the core principle of green design.

RMCAD’s Green Design Area of Emphasis is leading the field in preparing students to meet this demand. Studies begin with an examination of the environmental issues and basic principles and practices of green design. Through readings, research, field trips, site visits, guest lectures, and in-class discussion, students gain valuable information about sustainable materials, products, and methods for construction.

The historic RMCAD campus also serves as a living laboratory in which students studying green design can apply their knowledge to campus improvements and additions.
