Interior Design
Class of 2009
Hometown: Grand Junction, CO
Why did you choose to attend RMCAD?
I chose RMCAD because it is nationally and regionally accredited, and I was attracted to the great teacher-to-student ratio typical of a smaller school.
What has been your favorite class so far and why?
Restaurant + Retail Design. I really enjoyed having the chance to collaborate with Graphic Design to create an "identity" for our restaurant. The teamwork in that class results in such a unique, creative and comprehensive design.
Which Liberal Studies or Foundation Studies classes did you find the most surprising or useful?
I was surprised at how much I learned about myself in my (Liberal Studies) classes. The history aspect of those classes really helped me to become a more well-rounded designer. The most influential class I had was Humanities. The different cultures, religions, and myths that we studied gave me better insight into my own background.
What did your favorite professor do to earn your respect or admiration?
It's hard to choose a favorite professor, when I can think of several teachers at RMCAD who really inspire me. They are all extremely passionate and knowledgeable, and I feel so lucky to have them as mentors, role models and friends.
How has RMCAD prepared you for what you want to do when you graduate?
Right now I am really enjoying commercial design and would love to work for an interior design or architecture firm who specializes in this. I realized how much RMCAD has prepared me for this when I interviewed with a prospective employer who informed me I had more skills than recent architecture graduates he had interviewed.
How would you describe the students who attend RMCAD?
One thing that surprised me about RMCAD was how passionate and goal-oriented the students are. At my previous university, very few students actually took their classes seriously and seemed to be lacking a sense of purpose.
What do you like about living in Denver/Colorado?
Denver seems to have the best of everything—city, mountains, sun, snow, and scenery that never gets old! I couldn't imagine living anywhere other than Colorado.
How has your life changed since enrolling at RMCAD?
My life has changed in that I know I will graduate with a career I absolutely love, and that is extremely important to me.
Was there a moment when RMCAD changed from "a school" to "my school"?
Summer classes really helped me to feel more at home at RMCAD. It's a smaller group of students and a more laid-back environment where everyone is able to get to know each other better.
