The certificate is a non-degree, 15 credit-hour program consisting of six courses over three consecutive semesters. The certificate can be completed within one year.
This program is intended for experienced designers, builders and related industry professionals who want to learn about sustainable design and need to enhance their understanding, professional practice and credentials.
Courses blend relevant studies of history, theory, ethics, building systems, materials, construction methods, certification, site development and landscaping. Students develop successful integrated strategies for implementing sustainable planning, design and construction methods for new and existing structures.
The program expands students’ problem solving skills to include a whole-systems approach, preparing them to contribute successfully to the process of integrated design.
The program also emphasizes the development of a knowledge base for sustainable products, technologies, and processes and their appropriate applications in a variety of interior and building applications. Emphasis is upon the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system as a benchmark for sustainable design and professional sustainable design competencies.
