VASD Program Hosts Private Tour At MCA Denver

As part of the Visiting Artist, Scholar and Designer (VASD) Program’s investigation of today’s creative industry leaders, RMCAD students enjoyed a private tour of MCA Denver’s exhibition, Mark Mothersbaugh: Myopia, with Director Adam Lerner. Lerner led the group of 36 throughout the museum to explore drawings, paintings, films, sculpture and music by Mothersbaugh—spanning from the early 1970s to the present.

As an extraordinary and boundless contemporary artist and musician, Mothersbaugh co-founded the New Wave band DEVO and is the award winning composer of numerous films. The artist’s cross-disciplinary career positions him at the intersection of art and pop culture and exemplifies the identity of a contemporary artist as a cultural critic and creator. Mothersbaugh’s insatiable creative passion is presented in this exhibition and highlights the artist’s unique vision of the world from his own, unfettered imagination.

Adam Lerner, curator of the Myopia exhibition, admits that during the exhibition’s early development phase, he had his doubts. “I didn’t know if it was going to happen,” Lerner shared with the private tour. Mothersbaugh, as well exemplified by the vast collection of work at MCA Denver, seems to be perpetually busy working on any number of projects. “He has warehouses and warehouses filled with work,” said Lerner.

Then, Lerner had a chance run-in with Mothersbaugh in Palm Springs, CA—further solidifying their relationship and the exhibition’s success. For more than three years, Lerner worked with Mothersbaugh to curate the exhibition. The result is a brilliantly diverse array of work that seems to have its hands in every medium; it’s easy to forget that the entirety of the exhibition’s work is by one artist.

Mark Mothersbaugh: Myopia will remain open through April 12, 2015.
