Faculty Gallery Exhibition: Steam

Monday, Aug 24th to Monday, Nov 16th

The Faculty Gallery at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition, Steam, by artist and Foundations Faculty member Kimberly Putnam. The exhibition will run from August 24 – November 16, 2015. An opening reception will be held September 3 from 5-7 p.m. on the first floor of the Texas building.

The Exhibition
Self identity is a manifestation of beliefs that define who we are rather than what we look like. I am a woman. This is how I identify myself. My work is a self-reflection, looking deep within to find the soul of the woman known as me. This is not an easy thing to do because it means pulling off and away all that is safe and expose the rawness underneath. This is the focus of my work.

The content of my art is portraiture, specifically portraiture of women. I often use myself as the model. I would not consider my portraits as traditional in any sense of the word. The overarching concepts within the portraits deal with objectification and non-objectification of the female form with an exploration into the idea of the male gaze.

In John Berger’s book Ways of Seeing he speaks of how over the course of time women have learned to view themselves through their male counterpart’s ‘gaze.’ Simply stated, we have learned to objectify ourselves based on the male standards of beauty. As a response to this, my work shows the presence of femininity and the removal or manipulation of the female form either literally or metaphorically.

The rich, creative accomplishments of our online and on-campus faculty and staff serve as a strong foundation for our college. The exhibition showcases art and design works created by members of our RMCAD community with themes that range from investigations into the peculiarities of nature to art commissioned for Mercedes-Benz.

We also invite you to join us for two gallery talks, where the exhibition's artists give students and the public an in-depth look at the process and philosophy behind their work. Hosted in the Philip J. Steele Gallery:
Monday, October 20 at 11:30 a.m.
