Alumna's Photo Work Strengthens Movement

Commercial Photography alumna Tya Alisa Anthony is making a splash in the Denver arts scene just months after graduating as RMCAD’s Fall Class of 2015 Valedictorian.

Work from her series, “The Art of Being Natural,” conveys the inherent beauty and power of African American physique. Her portraits have helped support and convey the political message behind local organization, Colorado Urban Naturals—going without the application of over-advertised, synthetic cosmetic products is natural and beautiful.

Anthony’s work has caught the eye of Denver Post Fine Arts Critic, Ray Mark Rinaldi, who published an article on Anthony’s work and subsequent political statement. “Her portraits, mostly of African-American women, are intimate, fundamental, and personal, but they are also communal, conscious and political,” writes Rinaldi. “This combination of community and individualism drives Anthony’s work in ‘The Art of Being Natural,’ and it’s where the series succeeds best. We do, in the instant her pictures offer, see real people.”

We couldn’t be more proud and excited to see the photo work Anthony creates in the months and years to come—work strengthened by her professional balance of artistic ability and political statement.
