Campus Safety Tips

Good Morning RMCAD Community,

As we all have been adjusting back to re-engaging with our surroundings, enjoying activities publicly, living our daily lives, and more specifically being back on-campus and in classes, the RMCAD Safety + Security Office offers several general safety tips that can be useful in just about any situation. While many seem quite logical and no-brainers, most of us do not actively think about these things for incorporating into our personal habits and happenings. The following are offered for your awareness to hopefully help all of us stay safe as we move through our days and nights:

  • Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable, leave right away and go immediately to an area with lights and people.

  • Call Security if something seems odd. If you see it, say it. Report any unusual, suspicious, threatening, endangering, unsafe, or harassing activity. The smallest bit of information could prevent a crime and help protect yourself or others. We rely on the active participation of our whole community to look out for yourselves and each other.

  • Keep your ID/Key Card with you or at least in your daily-use bag, school bag, accessory item, purse, etc.

  • Strongly recommend utilizing the RMCAD Mobile App when appropriate. At a minimum, go to the app’s Emergency SMS Opt-In Notification System so that you will at least receive alerts for weather events, campus changes, closures, and the like.

  • Do not allow people to follow you into secure locations. Ask that a “tailgater” use their ID/Key Card for access. While this may seem rude, the intent of a key card system is to ensure that those who should be in a particular location are allowed while denying access to the misbehaving type.

  • Use well-lit, high-traffic routes when walking on campus, and if possible do not walk alone at night. Use the RMCAD Safety Escort program if you would like someone to accompany you to your car or another part of campus. You can call Safety + Security for the escort at 303-527-7271

  • Have your keys out and ready when walking back to your vehicle. Consider carrying a whistle on your keychain.

  • Stay aware of your surroundings, maintain situational awareness. Listening to music or using your phone can distract you from people or vehicles around you so at least keep the volume lower to hear outside sounds.

  • Do not display valuables openly in public or leave them visible in your vehicle (cash, laptop, phone, credit/debit card, etc), and always lock your vehicle. Keep your backpack, bag, computer case, etc near you at all times if you are in a public or high-traffic area.

  • The Safety+Security Committee and the CARE Team are important components of RMCAD’s efforts to provide a safe and secure environment for all. These entities underscore our commitment to the safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and the public.

  • Take advantage of the RMCAD Health + Wellness Center in the Rotunda building and by visiting the website here. You can also join the Health + Wellness Center group on the RMCAD Mobile App.

  • RMCAD maintains both a 24/7 physical in-person security staff on-campus and an around-the-clock security camera network.  Footage has been central in resolving issues on-campus and more importantly, they serve as a deterrent to criminals. The Safety and Security Office is currently in the process of continuing to expand, upgrade, and improve this network around campus for all of our well-being.
