About the Speaker

Carissa Samaniego is a visual artist based in Denver, CO. Her work and research explores the intersection of place and identity through a range of media including sculpture, video, installation, performance, and site-based projects. This work is influenced by her experience of growing up geographically, culturally, and ethnically “mixed.” Her projects embody the experience of this physical and psychological inbetween space to critically examine how form, material and mark-making can provide a multidimensional approach to unpacking the complex experience of having mixed identity.

Her work has been exhibited in the United States and Europe including the Kidwelley Industrial Museum in Wales, Galerie Klatovy Klenova in the Czech Republic, and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in the US. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Natural History, CO, Josephine Sculpture Park, KY and Stevens Point Sculpture Park, WI. In addition, she has produced collaborative commissions for Northern Spark and Art Shanty Projects, both Minnesota-based arts organizations. Samaniego has recently received awards and grants from Forecast Public Art, the McKnight Foundation, and International Sculpture Center. She earned her MFA from University of Colorado Boulder and her BA from Saint Catherine University.
