Faculty Commission Installed At RMCAD Sculpture Garden

RMCAD is pleased to celebrate the installation of the first faculty commission for the RMCAD Sculpture garden. The work is a 10′ tall sculpture by faculty member Matthew Harris. The sculpture is based on and titled after Bernini’s seventh-century sculpture, Apollo and Daphne. Both Bernini’s and Harris’ sculptures take inspiration from a particular moment in the important ancient Greek story when Daphne, who is trying to escape the controlling love of Apollo, wished for help and revived this help by turning into a bay laurel tree. This work has an important connection to the campus’ fertile grounds, the chase over desire that art and design students also find themselves in, and also art-historical connections, which are important to all art and design students.
