It’s never too early to start thinking about your future and if you see yourself pursuing a creative career and attending art school, look no further! As a high school student, there are a few things you can do to start prepping for your college experience as an art student. Take a look below on how you can start preparing for art school today!
1. Explore all art avenues.
While you are in high school, we recommend taking as many art classes, both during school and in your community, as you can. Everything from graphic design, to ceramics, watercolor and speciality courses. Experiment and explore several art mediums to help you grow as an artist and also to help you identify your true passion. By using this time in your high school years, you can come to college knowing exactly what you want to pursue.
2. Build your portfolio.
Once you’ve identified your main artistry path, it’s time to create, create and create. As early as you can in high school, compile your best work in one place to start building your art portfolio. Once your portfolio is complete and before you start applying to colleges or universities, we recommend attending a National Portfolio Day event to have the opportunity to meet representatives from a variety of National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) accredited colleges to review your portfolio and artwork.
3. Research and visit schools.
Next, it’s important to do research about student events, extracurriculars and overall school culture at the colleges you are interested in attending. In addition to looking for stellar art programs, you want to make sure a school is the right pick for you in all areas. Take the time during high school to visit as many art college campuses as you can. Whether you live in Colorado or out-of-state, RMCAD provides several opportunities for students to visit campus, including virtual and in person information sessions, and our online virtual tour. You can also schedule a tour at a time that works best for you.
4. Participate in RMCAD’s Dual Enrollment.
If you are interested in getting started in your college journey a little early, RMCAD offers the opportunity for exceptional junior and senior high school students to enroll for college credit while still completing their high school degree. RMCAD’s Dual Enrollment credits may be used to satisfy high school subject or credit requirements, as determined by the student’s high school. Dual Enrollment students may take online courses and register for one class in an 8-week term and up to six credits per semester for a total of 12 credits in an academic year.
