“I would suggest to every educator to get their Master’s Degree”

Molly Roberts is a mother, wife, teacher and graduate student. In other terms, she does it all. When she’s not in the classroom, the Colorado native loves spending time outdoors with her family. Roberts recently enrolled in the Education Media Design and Technology (EMDT) program at RMCAD to continue growing in an industry that isn’t slowing down anytime soon, education. We asked Roberts a few questions about her experience so far.

What classes and age groups do you teach?
I teach grades 7th-12th grade, particularly 7th-9th grade. Yes, I will state that I love teaching middle school, as most people would shock in horror to this. I love those goofballs. It’s when those students finally have those “ah-ha” moments and gain confidence in themselves through the art of creating…that’s why I teach.

Why did you decide to pursue Education Media Design + Technology?
I decided to pursue my EMDT degree because I knew I wanted to expand. After teaching for 8 years now, I was looking for more. I am the type of educator who is always looking for new and exciting ways to teach my content and I knew I needed more education to keep up with the times. And, I don’t know what the future will look like, and through this program, I will not only become more educated in this field but also more marketable if I want to pursue a career outside of teaching.

What have you gained so far by pursuing EMDT?
I learned so much thus far. So much, that I feel my brain can’t hold all this amazing content. I have really enjoyed the EDMT 5030-Presentation Design and Delivery the best so far. I learned so much about what it takes to become a good presenter.

How is a degree like this going to help you in the future?
I have already noticed how I am fine-tuning skills I already knew and gaining new skills through this degree and it will help me become a more effective art educator and knowledgeable in a new career if I want to pursue that. This program has already helped in online teaching in presenting information to my students in new ways that I have never done before. The length of my presentations, the designs, how I instructional design the content, etc.

Based on your experience, what’s your advice to educators who are considering getting their Master’s Degree?
I am looking at this through a new lens, the only one good thing to come from this pandemic, and it has forced me to teach in a new way and how to effectively teach online. I would suggest to every educator to get their Master’s Degree. Do it. It’s hard work, but so worth it. The amount of experience and wisdom that I am able to bring to the table that I wasn’t able to my bachelor’s degree is what is making this the most amazing experience and I know I have grown to become a better educator in the 5 months I’ve been enrolled so far. I waited and waited for this online degree to come back to RMCAD and I am so glad I did. This has been such a phenomenal journey so far. Designed well and I love the flexibility it offers to suit my busy home and work life!
