Meet Christine Sun Kim

Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design is kicking off the 10 year anniversary of its Visiting Artist, Scholar, and Designer program (VASD) with an especially accomplished artist, Christine Sun Kim. She is an American sound artist based in Berlin, Germany. Kim was born deaf, which led her to focus her artistic career on exploring the materiality of sound through various mediums such as visual art, composition, performance, and more. Her work dives into the sensory-rich process of connecting sound to drawing, painting, etc, as she was taught to believe that sound wasn’t a part of her life. This couldn’t be further from the truth, and her body of work proves that.

Christine Sun Kim uses the medium of sound in performance and drawing to investigate her relationship with spoken languages and her aural environment.  What Kim has done is essentially created her own language. One that incorporates elements of body language, American Sign Language (ASL), musical notation, and more. Her works explore how sound operates in society, and how to make audible noise perceivable both visually and conceptually.

Kim has participated in an expansive list of interviews and talks across the globe. She’s been interviewed for the New York Times about her concept of a “Sound Diet,” which expands on the different types of listening for various social and communicative situations. She’s spoken at a global art forum Art Dubai about exposing overlap in language systems like ASL through her presented work. Additionally, she presented a TED Talk about “The enchanting music of sound language” which explores sound etiquette, how she reclaimed ownership of sound as a Deaf woman and incorporating that into her art.

Selected exhibitions and performances have been held at MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge (solo); Ghebaly, Los Angeles (solo); White Space, Beijing (solo); Carroll/Fletcher, London (solo); De Appel, Amsterdam (solo); Serralves Museum, Porto; Sound Live Tokyo; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Berlin and Shanghai Biennials; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1, New York.

RMCAD is thrilled to welcome Christine Sun Kim to kick off our first artist talk for our VASD program! In her World Building artist talk, Title Zero (a Deaf English loanword for “no title”), artist Kim will share multiple projects that visualize and contextualize how sound operates in her life and in the lives of her both Deaf and hearing collaborators.
