Meet Jacolby Satterwhite

RMCAD is excited to continue its decennial anniversary of the VASD program with Jacolby Satterwhite. Satterwhite is an American contemporary artist based out of New York City, who works a variety of mediums including video, performance, 3D animation, fibers, drawing and printmaking.

Jacolby Satterwhite is originally from Columbia, South Carolina and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. The artist earned his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Arts and his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Satterwhite builds worlds through performance, sculpture, installation, music, and animation. Set in elaborate architectures, Satterwhite’s rich visual lexicon includes dancing bodies and 3D models of his late mother’s drawings of household objects and inventions. The artist’s unique mythology is made from personal, political, and cultural influences and experiences including queer theory, video games, consumerism, and desire offering simultaneous escape and celebration of carnal limitations and possibility.

Jacolby Satterwhite is celebrated for a conceptual practice addressing crucial themes of labor, consumption, carnality and fantasy through immersive installation, virtual reality and digital media. He uses a range of software to produce intricately detailed animations and live action film of real and imagined worlds populated by the avatars of artists and friends. These animations serve as the stage on which the artist synthesizes the multiple disciplines that encompass his practice, namely illustration, performance, painting, sculpture, photography and writing. Satterwhite draws from an extensive set of references, guided by queer theory, modernism and video game language to challenge conventions of Western art through a personal and political lens. An equally significant influence is that of his late mother, Patricia Satterwhite, whose ethereal vocals and diagrams for visionary household products serve as the source material within a decidedly complex structure of memory and mythology.

Last year Satterwhite collaborated with Solange Knowles on her visual album, “When I Get Home.” He has been featured in an Art21 project that explores the relationship between artist and what they create, called The Incredulity of Jacolby Satterwhite. Jacolby was aso featured in 2015 as one of the Forbes 30 under 20 in Art and Style, calling himself “an extended frame video installation performance diva.” Locations of exhibitions of his work include Pioneer Works in New York; Whitechapel Gallery in London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; New Museum in New York; San Francisco Museum of Art; and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia. The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Studio Museum in Harlem; and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Thess are merely some of the institutions that include Satterwhite’s work in their collections.

RMCAD will be hosting Jacolby Satterwhite on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 in his World Building artist talk.
