Meet Kevin Beasley

RMCAD is excited to continue its VASD Program’s World Building series on Tuesday, February 16th, 2021 with renowned artist Kevin Beasley. Beasley’s practice traverses sculpture, photography, and sound performance.

Kevin Beasley lives and works in New York. He earned his BFA from the College for Creative Studies (2007), and MFA from Yale (2012). Beasley’s sculpture works incorporate materials like cotton, clothing, sports equipment, and historic artifacts with casting materials such as resin and foam. He manipulates these materials with his body while the resin sets into place, allowing the materials to retain a body of their own. Many of the pieces he creates also include audio and incorporate sound-based art and performance. All of Beasley’s immersive works situate past-conjuring images, objects, and sounds into a contemporary context, allowing history to resonate through our modern lives.

Beasley’s works have been exhibited in locations that include The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Art Gallery of Ontario, The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Studio Museum in Harlem, and many other notable national and international galleries and museums.

Beasley’s artist talk at RMCAD titled Forging A View of a Landscape, will be about the process of A View of a Landscape – the exhibition presented at The Whitney Museum of American Art from December 2018 – March 2019. Beasley will cover the conception of the idea from when the artist attended graduate school in 2012 to the early development stages of the chamber in Milan, to the rehearsals for the performances within the exhibition. This will be a comprehensive conversation about the inner workings of this exhibition, how it came about, and what was involved to create the experience of the exhibition from seeing the motor running in silence to meditating to its sound in the listening room next door. Photography, sculpture, sound, installation, and performance span (thus far) eight years of work and development, presented with the intent to render legible the various societal, cultural, and historical forces at play in the artist studio.

RMCAD will be hosting Kevin Beasley’s World Building artist talk on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, at 12 p.m. MST. This event is free and open to the public.

RMCAD students, faculty, and staff can register to join the Next Day Q+A Session with the artist on Wednesday, February 17th, 2021 at 11:45 a.m. MST.
