RMCAD encourages creativity and curiosity in the local community

Lakewood, CO (September 20, 2022) – Community is at the core of Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design and has been since 1963. When Philip J. Steele founded the school, his mission was to make RMCAD a ‘community of creatives’, which nearly 60 years later still rings true.

RMCAD is passionate about expanding creativity, innovation and a desire for lifelong learning to the greater Denver area, which it does through various avenues, including its Wandering Pixel and newly restored fire truck. Both of these creative vehicles share a similar goal to bring further awareness about careers in the arts. Inside the Pixel, future students can get a taste of classes and programs at RMCAD by experimenting with the latest art and technology software. Along with visiting local high schools for educational field trips, the Pixel and fire truck have made appearances at the Parker Arts, Culture & Events Center, the Douglas County College Fair, the Colfax Marathon and the Denver Arts Festival – just to name a few. If you are interested in having the Pixel visit your school or upcoming event, please fill out the following contact form.

In addition to spreading awareness about careers in the arts, RMCAD is dedicated to providing support to other educators in the local community and has helped host events for JeffCo and Douglas County Professional Development Days. During these sessions, subject matter experts share inspiring lessons that guest educators can implement in their own classrooms.

RMCAD will also be hosting National Portfolio Day (NPD) on Saturday, October 8, 2022, where more than two dozen colleges and universities will be in attendance. At NPD events, students have the opportunity to meet with representatives from a variety of NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design) accredited colleges to review artwork and discuss programs for professional careers in the arts.

The art and design school has also added its artistic touch to a few other community projects. Since 2015, the school has implemented a RMCAD Day of Service (also known as Civic Engagement Saturday), where students, faculty and staff come together to participate in different service projects around the community. This year, participants volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity Restore, Residences at Creekside and PawsCo – where the team was able to sketch and draw pictures of dogs and cats to give to adoption families.

In addition, throughout the year, RMCAD has participated in several park cleanups and garden projects, and recently started working with Applewood Senior Living Community to offer free art classes and activities for residents.

“Community involvement is essential at RMCAD,” says Brent Fitch, RMCAD President. “We encourage our students, faculty and staff to not only participate in school-related community projects, but also to build their own community of creatives in the greater Denver area.”
