Not Your Average Field Trip: RMCAD Students Visit NYC

On March 14, a group of RMCAD Illustration students embarked on a not-so-average field trip to New York City.

For the students, some who attend school on campus and others who study online, it was a chance to get to know their peers, explore the city, meet with professionals in the field, and get valuable feedback on their work.

“It was like a breath of fresh air meeting people from school, being exposed to different areas of the professional world, and seeing work by artists I’ve studied for years,” said Illustration student Abigail Sparks.

Over the course of the weekend trip, students had studio visits with Illustrator Anthony Calandra and RMCAD Fine Arts alumnus Jenny Morgan. They also visited Scholastic, where they met with the editorial staff of Arthur A. Levine, who served as editor of the Harry Potter Series, among other well-known books. In addition to meeting with the staff to learn about how publishers work with illustrators, students were able to have their portfolios reviewed by the staff.

The portfolio reviews continued throughout the weekend—the group met with representatives from Astound and Artisique, two prominent artist management businesses. During their visits, students were able to discuss industry trends with artist representatives in addition to getting feedback on their work.

“It was an experience that I couldn’t have gotten any other way,” said Illustration student Krister Eide. “We got feedback from important people in the field while meeting established reps and professional artists so we could think more concretely about what careers we wanted to pursue and what steps we could take to make our dreams a reality.“

Last but not least, students got the chance to explore art throughout the city, visiting the Society of Illustrators, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum.

“The most motivating piece I saw was a small sketch at the Society of Illustrators by Arthur Rackham,” said Sparks. “I love his work so much and look to it often for inspiration and technique.”
