Three reasons to let your child take a chance on an art degree

To get a degree or to not get a degree – that is the question. Pursuing a bachelor’s degree, whether art-specific or not, can be risky and a big decision. However, in the words of Geena Davis, “If you risk nothing, then you risk everything.” There’s so much more to an arts degree than meets the eye, so we’ve created a list of the remarkable benefits your child can gain from pursuing an art degree.

1. More career opportunities.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 75% of the top art and design occupations require a bachelor’s degree for entry level roles. Designers are largely becoming a staple for companies and businesses around the world. From non-profits, to technology firms, and even local breweries, these teams are looking to hire in-house designers to act as a jack-of-all-trades, like graphic designers. Depending on your child’s desired career path, an art degree can also provide them with a more competitive pay. In May 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the median annual wage for art and design occupations was higher than the average for all occupations. To learn more about potential art career paths, visit RMCAD’s Academics page and select your child’s desired field of study.

2. Expansion of knowledge now, and in the future.
As no surprise, getting a degree will further advance your child’s education and allow them to bring a new world of expertise to their craft. RMCAD students have the opportunity to explore different mediums and classes to truly find their niche and grow as artists. Our professors also teach students applicable business and entrepreneurial skills, including learning how to market and sell their masterpieces. At RMCAD, we start career development from Day One and that doesn’t stop once students graduate. Alumni have the opportunity to access our campus facilities and labs through our Alumni Pass or attend post-grad classes through our RMCAD Renew program. Learn more about all of our alumni benefits!

3. A powerful network of connections.
From professors, to fellow students, to guest speakers, art school opens up the doors to meet and connect with people across the industry. Connections are powerful in the world of the arts and can help open up the door to future internships or job opportunities. At RMCAD, our professors are working artists (several of which are featured at Meow Wolf), so they are able to provide great insight to students on what it is like to be an artist. In addition, our campus hosts several events throughout the year, including RMCAD’s Visiting Artist, Scholar, and Designer (VASD) Program, which helps students further connect with professional creatives.
