What Can You Do With a Degree in Graphic Design

What can you do with a degree in graphic design?

With careers in graphic design expected to increase by 3% in the next 10 years, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, choosing to pursue a degree in graphic design might be the right choice for you. Graphic design may seem like a highly specific field, but it can set you up for success in many different careers. So, let’s explore the question – what can you do with a degree in graphic design?

In no specific order, here are 10 career options for graphic designers:

  • Motion graphics designer
  • Environmental designer
  • Front-end web designer
  • Package design
  • Advertising
  • Social media designer
  • Logo or brand manager
  • Type designer
  • Publication designer
  • User experience and user interaction designer (UX/UI)

While the roles and responsibilities of a designer can vary based on specialty, there are three main paths a graphic designer can take.

 1. Agency designer or art director
An agency is an exciting setting because the majority of your team will also be designers with a similar education. Your main differences will be speciality and level of experience. In an agency, the roles are split up between junior and senior designers, and art directors.

2. In-house graphic designer
In-house design is a fulfilling career option because many different companies and businesses require in-house designers. This path allows you the opportunity to design for a company or industry that you are passionate about. Non-profit, technology, fashion, food service companies, and many more, hire in-house designers to act as a jack-of-all-trades on their team.

3. Self-employed business owner
Last but not least, you can be an entrepreneur or your own boss! As a graphic design entrepreneur, you pick your specialization, projects and clients. However, it is wise to start with a broad specialization as an entrepreneur to ensure you have a steady income when you start your business.
