Phil Steele: Centennial Celebration

Of all the work Philip J. Steele produced in his lifetime, perhaps his most profound creation is the educational impact he impressed upon his students and fellow instructors. A passionate educator, Steele was known for incorporating both exacting standards and playful classroom antics into his teaching style. His legacy as founder of what is now RMCAD is carried on through the artistic expression of the college’s faculty, alumni, and students today.
The Centennial Celebration commemorates the late Steele’s academic focus, artistic skill, and profound personality through an exhibition of his work. Themes and activities based on his interests will also be intertwined into the exhibition’s opening. The commemorative exhibition will open at 5 p.m., with a panel discussion from 6-7 p.m.
Mark Steele, Philip’s son, will also lead a clay figure-sculpting workshop the following day, Thursday, September 8. Working from a live model, the focus will be on sculpting the human form while recalling themes and methods inspired by his father’s love for the human figure. We will learn the art of building form and dimension using air-dry clay, which allows each participant the opportunity to keep their efforts.
