ABOUT THE LECTURE

Fear, Myth, and Decadence in the Digital Age

For the first presentation in the Fictions lecture series, artist Jonathan Monaghan will present an overview of his interdisciplinary practice which includes sculptures, videos, and prints. Monaghan creates imaginative and unsettling worlds and characters which draw on a wide array of references from ancient mythology, to science fiction, to corporate logos. Produced using high-end computer graphics, his works critique the digital age and elicit subconscious anxieties surrounding technology, authority, capitalism and society’s uneasy relationship with the natural world. A reception with the artist celebrating the concurrent opening of his solo exhibition Synthetic Mythologies will be hosted in the Philip J. Steele Gallery immediately following the lecture. Monaghan will also screen four videos for the SUPERNOVA Outdoor Digital Animation Festival on September 20, 2018.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jonathan Monaghan works across a range of media, including prints, sculpture, and animated video, to produce otherworldly objects and narratives. Past exhibitions and screenings of his work include The Sundance Film Festival, The Walters Museum of Art, and The Frist Center for the Visual Arts, and the Palais de Tokyo. His work has been featured in several media outlets including The Washington Post, VICE, The Wall Street Journal and The Village Voice. The artist is based in Washington D.C.
