Online Interior Design Program Overview

Online Interior Design students work closely with online faculty to develop a deep understanding of the technical and artistic aspects of interior design. As practicing industry professionals, our online faculty share real world experience with you to enhance your overall knowledge of interior design. You’ll learn important technical components such as hand drafting, CAD, material sourcing as well as infrastructure codes and regulations that affect your industry.

You’ll graduate with the skills, creativity, and commitment necessary to become a successful and environmentally responsible interior designer.

Online Interior Design Program Highlights

Hospitality Design

Students understand the physical, psychological, cultural and social considerations of designing hospitality projects, including lobbies, restaurants and retail using collaborative approaches and research methods. 

Construction Documents + Contracts

Students understand interior construction and its interrelationship with base building construction and systems.

Manual Drafting + Computer Aided Design (CAD)

Students use CAD systems as a drafting/design tool for interior design. Areas of study include CAD systems (hardware, software, procedures, and standards) and terminology as applied to architectural drawing types.

Upon successful completion, students will have acquired the necessary manual drafting skills and understanding of drawing conventions to apply to future studies in interior design.

Environmental + Human Behavior

Students apply the principles of acoustics, thermal comfort, indoor air quality and water and waste management in relation to environmental impact and human well-being.

Space Planning

Students will learn how to plan common residential and commercial spaces with considerations for physical and psychological factors, spatial relationships, functionality, safety, accessibility and specific needs.

Lighting Design

Students apply the principles and theories of light and color effectively in relation to environmental impact and human wellbeing.

Liberal Arts

The Liberal Arts curriculum is an exciting part of every student’s academic and creative journey at RMCAD. These courses provide the opportunity for students to engage with complex questions and ideas to develop critical thinking skills, a global consciousness, and awareness of art historical foundations that are essential for their intellectual, creative, and personal growth.

Global Consciousness

The curious engagement with communities, perspectives, and narratives that do not match our own offers the opportunity to see one’s personal and creative role in our local, national, and global communities. 

Critical Awareness

The willingness to ask questions and resist easy answers & simplistic dualities offers the opportunity to more clearly understand the complexity and multifaceted reality of history, creativity, and human communities. 

Information Literacy

The ability to read closely, critique freely, and seek additional verifiable information offers the opportunity to more holistically discern the veracity of the information that inundates our lives.

Online Interior Design Degree Requirements

RMCAD’s Online Interior Design Bachelor’s Degree offers a curriculum from a variety of disciplines such as architecture, environmental design, graphic design, and industrial design. Our proprietary virtual learning management system is designed to help students acquire a broad base of knowledge to help them develop a strong artistic and technical skill set.

Tech + Tools

RMCAD’s Online Interior Design Program is structured to gradually increase in difficulty as the courses progress, so that students accumulate the skills necessary to successfully build beautiful, functional spaces. With an added focus on sustainable design that is environmentally responsible, students can feel good about promoting their artistic vision in an ethical, appealing way.
