Fictions

THE 2018/2019 LECTURE SERIES

The Fictions lecture series investigates the complicated relationship between contemporary artists and veracity. In broad swathes of contemporary life and culture, notions of shared, objective, empirical truths are currently being challenged and blurred in new ways. However, there is a long and rich history of artworks that intentionally mislead, obfuscate, and falsify. In the context of art, these illusions are permitted, even expected and desired, and often wield the hoax as an instrument for truth.

This series explores what it means to create and revel in imagined and simulated worlds, uncanny characters, and magical actions, at a time when the slippage between truth and fiction muddles modern life.
