A team of RMCAD Interior Design students has taken first place at the 2012 Student Sustainable Design Competition (SSDC) put on by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). The competition recognizes an outstanding sustainable design project by interior design college students.
The RMCAD team—Grace Kirby, Ashley Lauria, and Julie Warren—submitted their project, “Solitaire Market.” The project reimagines an 1896 mercantile building in downtown Denver into a combination grocery store-cafe-wine bar. The design includes reclaimed wine barrels to house bulk goods and an aquaponic system that would provide both fresh produce and fish directly to the grocery store.
In awarding the RMCAD team first place, judge Jean Hansen from HDR Architecture said, “The delightful design of the historic former Denver, CO, mercantile building for the Solitaire Market is to be commended. The sustainable design focus was holistic; it begins at the community level with a focus on human health and is also found in the details for the expected as well as the creative ‘market’ elements for the LoDo community the project will serve.”
Congratulations to the RMCAD team and all of the winning projects!
