Collapsing Time

THE 2017/2018 LECTURE SERIES

The Collapsing Time Lecture Series challenges a singular perspective of time by presenting manifold interpretations of time’s malleability while considering how flattening past, present, and future through creative models can generate new experiences of time beyond physical limitations.

As humans, we experience time as a linear, limited, and measured entity. The imaginative nature of art and design—providing novel insights into our world and experiences—allows us to challenge our quotidian and restrictive conception of time by dismantling absolutes and poking holes in barriers assumed to be impermeable. From simple gestures like acknowledging the present moment’s continuous slippage from future to past or our obsession with nostalgia, to grand revelations of future apocalypse fabricated from warring pasts, contemporary artists, scholars, and designers are tinkering with and breaking clocks, disassembling time, and contemplating what happens when such a universally accepted concept folds in onto itself.
